Editorial Reviews

Children’s Literature

April and Mae are best friends. So are their pets. Every day, they do an activity together. When the girls see a poster asking for volunteers to help raise money for the library through a talent show, they find ways to help. Shy Mae draws posters to help sell tickets to the show. Gregarious April plans to perform on the piano. As April takes the stage, she freezes, suddenly shy. Mae cheers and claps for her friend. Her cat and April’s dog join in the fun, and the talent show is a wild success. In another charming tale of friendship, April and Mae learn about community involvement and challenging shyness. While both April and Mae face fears and overcome them, they also recognize their personalities and individual talents and find ways to use them to help the community. April supports Mae’s art and celebrates her important contribution to the event, even though she doesn’t perform in the show. Mae cheers for April, supporting her role in the show and encouraging her when she’s afraid. Altogether, this is a wonderful story about friendship and helping each other while respecting individuality. This is a perfect series for readers advancing beyond picture books.
